What is the status of the Hudson River Greenway in the Bronx?
Community Board 8 passed a resolution in 2014 calling for an all waterfront greenway along the Hudson River. The project is supported by all of our local elected officials. In 2018, a feasibility study was conducted by the MTA that found that a greenway could indeed be built on rip rap (boulders to prevent erosion), at grade, and on elevated piers (pylons). The next step is to secure funding to perform a detailed engineering report.
What will the completed Greenway cost?
It’s estimated that the entire project will cost between $80 and $120 million. However, it’s widely understood that the project will be completed in phases, each costing $10 to $20 million.
What is the biggest impediment to the project?
The greatest obstacle will be negotiating the challenges presented by the limited space between the MTA’s rail infrastructure and the River.
How will we be able to access the Greenway?
The project calls for several possible access points, the most feasible being the Metro North stations at Spuyten Duyvil (via a sky bridge) and 254th St.
Will the Greenway connect to existing paths/trails in Manhattan and Yonkers?
The ultimate goal is to connect the Hudson River Greenway in the Bronx to the Greenway on the west side of Manhattan and the Croton Aqueduct Trail in Yonkers, thereby creating a continuous path from the Battery to Albany and beyond.
What can I do to make this happen?
Advocate. Educate. Support. Volunteer.
Advocate: let our elected officials (and candidates for public office) know that you want to see the Hudson River Greenway happen. This can be done via letters to the editor in local papers, direct communications to their district offices or face-to-face. Also, get on the Community Board 8 e-mail list by contacting bx08@cb.nyc.gov to receive updates on meetings of the Special Committee on the Greenway. Please attend these meetings, which are held several times a year, and let your voice be heard.
